A drop shadow lifts text off its background. A soft, blurred one makes white text readable over a photo without the heaviness of an outline; a hard, offset one in a solid colour gives the flat "retro poster" look. Both are the same two controls here: how far the shadow is pushed, and how much it is blurred.

A shadow lifts letters off a photo; the outline text png preset does that job with a hard edge instead, and the transparent text png version leaves the background alone.

The shadow is rendered into the PNG with transparency, so it fades naturally into whatever you place the image on. If you want the long-shadow style, push the offset up and the blur down.

How to make a Shadow Text PNG

  1. Type your text and pick a font. Oswald, Montserrat and Anton are clean choices for shadowed text.
  2. Choose the text colour and the shadow colour. Black or a dark version of the background colour is the usual shadow.
  3. Set the blur: 0 for a hard-edged shadow, 10 to 20 for a soft one.
  4. Set the offset to move the shadow down and right.
  5. Download PNG.
