An outline is what keeps text readable when you cannot control what is behind it. White letters with a dark stroke stay legible over a bright sky, a dark room and everything in between - which is why it is the default style for video subtitles, thumbnails and memes. This page draws the stroke with rounded joins so thick outlines stay smooth instead of growing spikes at sharp corners.

Outlined text holds up over busy images, as does the shadow text png preset, and the transparent text png version keeps the background out of the way.

Turn off the fill for a hollow, "wireframe" version: only the stroke is drawn and the inside of each letter is transparent, so whatever sits behind shows through the letters.

How to make a Outline Text PNG

  1. Type your text and pick a bold font - outlines need some stroke width to wrap around.
  2. Choose the fill colour and the outline colour. White on black or black on white is the safe pair.
  3. Set the outline thickness. 4 to 8 pixels suits most text; go thicker for a sticker look.
  4. Tick "Hollow" to remove the fill and keep only the outline.
  5. Download PNG.

Common questions

The stroke is centred on the letter edge, so half of it lies inside. The tool draws the stroke first and the fill on top so the inside of the letter is never covered, but very thick strokes on thin fonts can still close up the gaps - use a bolder font.
