Why the characters are wide
Japanese, Chinese and Korean text is traditionally set on a square grid, with every character occupying the same cell. When Latin letters appear inside that text they look far too narrow, so Unicode includes a full set of Latin letters, digits and punctuation drawn at the full cell width to sit alongside them.
Used on their own in an English sentence, those same characters produce the airy, deliberately spaced look associated with vaporwave design — which is where most people meet them.
Where it works, and where it does not
- Works: Instagram and TikTok bios, Discord names, X posts, YouTube titles and most chat apps. The characters are ordinary Unicode, so they survive being pasted.
- Watch out: each character takes twice the visual space, so a 160-character bio holds about half as much wide text as normal text.
- Avoid: anything that has to be searched for. To a search box ｈｅｌｌｏ and hello are different strings, so a wide username can make an account hard to find.
- Not for body copy. Wide text is slow to read in quantity and screen readers handle it inconsistently. One line as a design choice, not a paragraph.
