Best Gamertag Generator

Names that actually fit Xbox, PlayStation and everywhere else – built around a word of your own if you want one.

Click any name to copy it. The small number is its length against the limit for the platform you picked.

Xbox allows spaces where other platforms do not, so a steam name or a valorant name needs a different shape, and the font generator styles whichever you settle on.

How to get a gamertag people remember

A gamertag is the name every other player sees – on the scoreboard, in the lobby, in the clip somebody posts afterwards. It is the one part of your profile that travels, so it is worth more than thirty seconds and a string of numbers.

The generator above builds names from two halves: a descriptor and a noun, joined without a space so they read as one word. Type something into the first box – your name, a game you play, a word you like – and every result will be built around it. Leave it empty and you get twelve from scratch.

What makes a name work

  • Short enough to say out loud. If someone has to spell it back to you in voice chat, it is too long. Two syllables beats four.
  • No number padding. xXShadow1997Xx reads as a name that was already taken three times. If your first choice is gone, change the word, not the count.
  • Nothing personal in it. Not your birth year, not your real surname, not your town. It is public to everyone you play against.
  • Say it before you commit. Some names look fine and sound like something else entirely.

The character limits that matter

Each platform enforces its own rule, which is why the generator asks where you will use the name before it makes any. Getting this wrong is the usual reason a name you liked is rejected at sign-up.

Platform Length Allowed
Xbox up to 12 Letters, numbers and spaces. Must start with a letter.
PlayStation 3–16 Letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores.
Discord 2–32 Lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and full stops.
Steam up to 32 Most characters, including spaces and symbols.
Styled characters will not pass sign-up. Xbox and PlayStation accept plain letters and numbers only, so a name like 𝓢𝓱𝓪𝓭𝓸𝔀 is rejected. Those belong in a display name, a bio or a clan tag – which is what the font generator is for. Pick a plain gamertag here first, then style it there for everywhere it is allowed.

Changing your gamertag on Xbox

From the console, press the Xbox button on your controller, then:

  1. Profile & system
  2. My profile
  3. Customise profile
  4. Select your current gamertag
  5. Enter the new one and check it is available

Your first change is free. After that Microsoft charges for each one, so it is worth settling on a name you will still want in a year. You can also do it in a browser while signed in to your Microsoft account.

Changing your PlayStation online ID

From Settings → Users and Accounts → Account → Profile → Online ID. The first change is free and later ones are paid. Your old ID stays reserved so nobody else can take it, and games released before April 2018 may not display the new one correctly – you can revert once, for free, if one breaks.

If the name you want is taken

On a platform with hundreds of millions of accounts, most single words are gone. Rather than adding digits, try these – the generator uses the same moves:

  • Join two words that are not usually joined: QuietVolcano.
  • Put a descriptor in front of your own name: NeonJamie.
  • Drop a vowel: Shdow reads the same and is far more likely free.
  • Use a word from something you actually like, not from a list of gaming words.

Looking for something more specific? The gaming name generator covers clans and characters, the username generator is better for accounts outside gaming, and the Valorant and Roblox generators are tuned to those games.

Frequently asked questions

A gamertag is the public username that identifies you on a gaming platform. It appears on scoreboards, in friend lists and in lobbies, and it is how other players find and add you. On Xbox it is called a gamertag; PlayStation calls the same thing an online ID.

Twelve characters on Xbox, and three to sixteen for a PlayStation online ID. Discord allows up to thirty-two and Steam the same. Pick your platform above and every name generated will already fit, with its length shown on the tile.

Not on Xbox or PlayStation – both accept plain letters and numbers only, and reject anything else at sign-up. Styled Unicode characters do work in Discord display names, Steam profiles, clan tags and bios. Generate a plain name here, then style it with the font generator for the places that allow it.

Your first change is free on both Xbox and PlayStation. Every change after that is charged, which is a good reason to settle on a name rather than cycling through them.

Some will be – there is no way to check availability from here, because no platform publishes that. There are around forty thousand base combinations before number swaps, so generating another batch is quick. Adding a word of your own in the first box makes a name far less likely to be taken.
