The 3D effect here is a true extrusion: the letter shape is repeated and shifted down and to the right, one pixel at a time, in the side colour, then the face is drawn on top. That is how poster and game-title lettering gets its chunky depth, and because it is built from the real font outline it works with any of the fonts in the list, not just one pre-made alphabet.

Depth needs contrast, so the shadow text png preset is the subtler version of the same idea, and the text logo maker sizes the result for a header.

Heavy fonts show the depth best. Bungee, Anton, Titan One and Luckiest Guy are the usual picks; script fonts work too but read as ribbon rather than block. Add a thin outline if the face and side colours are close in tone.

How to make a 3D Text PNG

  1. Type the text. One or two words at a large size gives the strongest effect.
  2. Pick a face colour and a side colour. A darker shade of the face colour looks like shading; a contrasting colour looks like a sticker.
  3. Set the depth. 8 to 16 pixels is a normal extrusion; 30 is a deep block for a big title.
  4. Optionally add an outline to separate the letters from the background.
  5. Download PNG. The extrusion is included in the transparent area, so nothing gets cropped.

Common questions

It is a solid extrusion built from many copies of the letter outline, so the sides are fully filled - unlike a drop shadow, which is a single offset blur.
The extrusion goes down-right, the classic poster angle. Flip the finished PNG horizontally in your editor for a down-left version.
The extrusion is as thin as the strokes, so hairline fonts turn into fine lines. Use a bold or display font for a solid block.
A font size of 120 to 160 gives text roughly 300 to 400 pixels tall at 2x, which is right for a 1280x720 thumbnail.
